Here is the latest update from Ross Appel – City of Charleston Councilmember (as seen on the OWNA Facebook page):
Yesterday, City Council approved funding for the Windermere Neighborhood Drainage Improvements Project – the most significant stormwater improvement project in this area’s history.
This $10+ million investment will add a new drainage outfall behind the St. Andrews Math & Science School, improve the existing Ackerman outfall, install new/larger drainage pipes under Ackerman, and address years of chronic flooding that has impacted this community.
This project has been one of my top priorities since I was elected in 2019. We have been tirelessly working on it ever since, navigating the planning, engineering, permitting, and funding pieces to get to this moment. To see it finally come to fruition is incredibly fulfilling.
Work is set to begin this summer. We will be reaching out to the neighborhoods soon to schedule a community kick-off meeting in late April, so stay tuned for details.
None of this happens without a team effort. Thank you to Mayor Cogswell and my colleagues on City Council for approving this and making it happen. And a very special shout-out to Stormwater Director Matt Fountain and the outstanding City staff who have driven this project forward. You all have been exceptional.

Thank you for taking the time to read this – see you around the neighborhood!
